Dr. Sally Shelton

Dr. Sally Shelton

Theological Librarian and Associate Professor

Some people ask God to go with them wherever they go; here at ORU we ask where God is moving, and then we move with Him. That was the catchphrase in an ORU brochure that caught Sally Shelton's eye shortly before she came as a freshman in 1967, the third year the University was open. The concept stirs her heart to this day.

A librarian at ORU since 1996, Sally Shelton has several family connections at ORU. Her senior year, her father, Grant H. Moore, missionary to Guinea, West Africa, came to teach French and eventually served as chair of the Modern Languages department. Later that same year, Sally met her husband-to-be, now long-time ORU professor of New Testament, James B. Shelton, who asked her for their first date in the Library and later proposed to her by the Prayer Tower. The following year, they married in the Prayer Tower gardens with Sally's father and Brother Bob Stamps, ORU chaplain, officiating. Years later, two of their children, who are ORU alumni themselves, would also marry ORU alumni.

After graduating, Sally taught for a year and then became a writer and eventually managing editor of Daily Blessing, Oral Roberts devotional magazine. Several years later, the couple moved with their infant son John to Scotland where for three years Jim pursued his doctorate at the University of Stirling and where their second son Joey was born. There Sally's spiritual and cultural horizons broadened as she and husband became involved with the campus Chinese Christian Fellowship and the local Catholic Charismatic renewal, as well as the Stirling Methodist church. Classical Pentecostal by birth, Sally began to see the Church as much larger than she had ever imagined.

For a few years after the couple's return to the States and the birth of their daughter Jenny, Sally was a full-time, stay-at-home mother, but once the children were in school, she became what she calls a perennial student. While serving as director of a downtown Tulsa church library, she earned a Master of Library and Information Studies degree from the University of Oklahoma. Then, while working at ORU as a librarian, she acquired a Master of Arts in theology. Sally completed her PhD in Theological Studies at Regent University, Virginia, in May 2016.

A missionaries' kid, Sally wholeheartedly embraces the diversity, cultural and denominational, found at ORU, seeing it as essential to fulfilling Oral Roberts vision of going "into every person's world." As followers of Jesus, Sally says, "we are called to be perfected in unity since this is what our Lord himself prayed: "that they may all be one . . . that the world may believe " (John 17:21). It is only as we exhibit understanding and respect for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, despite our differences, that we will effectively communicate God's love and truth to the rest of the world.

Sally is the proud grandmother of seven.
