Dr. Even Culp
Professor of Communication and Director of the Center for Faculty Excellence
Dr. Even A. Culp serves the University in several roles and students benefit from his experience and rich background. He completed his Bachelor and Masters from Florida State University in Communication, Media and Instructional Design. While earning his doctorate at the University of Tulsa, his dissertation focused on media uses and gratification. He was privileged to work with several noted faculty members, including constructionist, Robert Gagne, Leslie Briggs, Walter Dick, John Carey and Walt Wager.
Dr. Culp created the MultiMedia Institute where students experience all aspects of media during this immersive year. Professor Culp is a documentary storyteller. His filmmaking has taken him from the foothills of Georgia to the plains of Kansas exploring Cherokee culture. These programs have received five Telly national awards. Of great benefit, students served as directors, associate producers and crew members for the programs, providing them with invaluable experience. Dr. Culp's latest documentary effort shares the experiences of a Pearl Harbor survivor.
At ORU, Dr. Culp mentors students serving in industry internships: advertising, marketing, journalism, web development, broadcasting, music, technical writing, film and TV production as well as sound mixing/recording. Many of these former students work for Fortune 500 companies, have established their own businesses, or serve in creative roles in key media outlets.
Professor Culp focuses on globalization in his capstone class, Campaign Strategies. Teams of senior students partner with real-world clients to solve basic problems in developing nations. After students complete basic research, they produce a media package to communicate the problem and solution to a funding organization. Students demonstrate creativity and message crafting which impacts individuals, villages and cultures. Students literally are changing the world using their creative talents and communication skills.
At the Trustees request, Dr. Culp created the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE). CFE offers faculty the opportunity to engage in professional development, honing their skills to engage students in meaningful learning. Best practices on teaching strategies, project-based learning, gaming, and assessment are offered through face-to-face and online training. Faculty mentor and coach one another in one-on-one interactions and workshops. Dr. Culp’s teaching and service initiatives have been recognized by university faculty, administration, alumni and the community. He has been honored with Innovation, Professionalism, and Service awards from ORU. The Oklahoma Governor has recognized him as Professional of the Year and the College and University Personnel Association have honored him with “Best of Region” for his presentations.
